The Lamprechtshöhle, in Czech Lamprecht Cave, is located in St. Martin near the town of Lofer. From Bad Gastein it is an hour's drive along the B311. But the cave is definitely worth a trip , because it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Salzburg and the whole of Austria.
The Lamprecht Cave is an incredible 35 kilometres long, making it the longest cave in Europe. It offers visitors a 700-metre long route with a total of 392 steps that overcome 70 metres of elevation gain. Although you won't find the classic stalactites or ice decorations in the cave, you can enjoy the underground waterfalls, streams and lakes. During the tour of the cave you will pass through several tunnels, ending with a large rock hall.
The Lamprecht Cave belongs to a group of karst formations with an active water flow, the strength of which varies throughout the year depending on the altitude. The interior of the cave changes each time into a slightly different form.
The dominant geological structures in the area determine the direction and extent of the cave system, which is located at the interface between the dolomite layers and the Dachstein limestone, which is about 400 metres thick. The oldest floor of Lamprecht Cave was probably formed 12 million years ago. The youngest floor dates from 10 000 years ago.
The length of the explored passages is approximately 50 km and is constantly increasing with each successful expedition. The total elevation in the connected cave system reaches 1632 m. Despite the high elevation, the entire cave system mapped so far is relatively easy to access, and organized groups with caving equipment regularly visit areas off the main sightseeing route with a guide. The route is very well secured with pitons, ropes and ladders and therefore requires no special climbing training.
The Lamprecht Cave provides a pleasant cooling during hot summer days. However, you should keep in mind the very low temperature of 5-7°C and equip yourself with suitable clothing. In case of rainy weather, the cave provides a suitable refuge and is a great substitute for a planned trip to the countryside. The adjacent hotel with a restaurant, which is presented directly on the cave's official website as a place where they offer dishes made from fresh local ingredients, prepared according to old local recipes, is a great place for tourists.
While you're in the Lofer area, don't miss the chance to hike to the Vorderkaserklamm or Seisenbergklamm gorge.
