Gold mining has a rich tradition in the Gastein valley, dating back to the 14th century! Thanks to the abundant mountain gold, the Salzburg bishopric was very well off. The last century marked a stop for gold mining and now you can play with the pan yourself, rolling the sand from left to right, up and down and patiently panning for the first gold flakes. It's estimated that over 120 tonnes of gold lie in the area, waiting for adrenaline-fuelled gold diggers. Take home a literal gold souvenir!
