"Goass" is the regional term for "goat". They are a very popular animal in the region. You can process their milk, their fur and of course their meat. In the western world, the goat is second only to sheep (for their wool), cows (for their milk) and pigs (for their meat). But this is not the case in Gastein! Here the goat is still popular. On the farms and in the mountain pastures, goats spend their time peacefully.
Goat gardener
In the summer months the goats are let loose and roam freely on the mountain pastures. Even if you don't like them, you will appreciate them during your travels through the mountain ranges. They take perfect care of the local landscape so you don't have to jump over small bushes and wade through tall grass. The view of the pastures with grazing goats is also very romantic.
Goassabtrieb and the Great Country Fair
As summer draws to a close and the goats are about to be herded back into the valley, the Goassabtrieb is celebrated every other year in Gastein together with the Great Country Fair. This year's Goassabtrieb is held annually. The dates for the next edition can be found athttps://www.gastein.com/cz/udalosti/. Farmers head into the mountains early in the morning to herd the goats into the valley. More than 80 animals leave their summer pastures. In the meantime, locals and tourists will gather at the farm in Bad Hofgastein, where they will welcome the herders and their cattle with music and dancing at around 1 pm.
Join us and enjoy an ancient Bad Hofgastein tradition that survives to this day. You can visit the festival during your holiday in Bad Gastein and combine it with a cycling trip or hiking in the mountains.
