The song was first performed to the public in 1818 on Christmas Eve in Oberndorf near Salzburg. The text was composed by the young chaplain Joseph Mohr in 1816. Two years later, the organist Gruber from Upper Austria composed the music for the poem. After it was heard in the church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, it showed no interest and fell in with the other ordinary songs. Later, thanks to the repair of the organ in the church, the sheet music of the song was found and the local organist liked it so much that he started to spread it further and further. In 1838, due to its popularity, it was included in the Leipzig songbook and in 1843 it was included in the list of the German music fund. Gradually it spread throughout the world and began to be translated into various languages. Although times have changed, Silent Night is a symbol of Christmas, a symbol of joy, of time spent together. And now the whole of Salzburg and the surrounding area will celebrate this magical anniversary - 200 years since this perfect carol came to light. To mark the anniversary, various concerts and celebrations will be held throughout Salzburg and the surrounding area to bring people together to remember and celebrate this important part of musical history.
Silent Night is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
