Austria is a country that is closely linked to nature. In almost every corner you will find a place with a unique charm. Almost everywhere you will be captivated by the magnificent views of the mountains or the vast valleys. Austria is also a place with many mysterious gorges, which should not be overlooked by any tourist interested in nature. In this article we will give you tips on which ones to visit.

Wolfskamm Gorge

The Wolfskamm Gorge could be classified as one of the most beautiful places in the whole of Tyrol. It can be found near the town of Stans in the Karwendel mountains. If you visit this gorge, you can look forward to a deep gorge that gives a wild impression. The gorge can be navigated by wooden walkways or footbridges. You can rest on the viewing platforms, where the Stanserbach River will be roaring under your feet. If you reach the end of the route, you will be greeted by the Felsenkloser Monastery and the Georgenberg Hermitage, the oldest pilgrimage site in Tyrol

Zammer Lochputz

If you are attracted by mystery and dark corners, don't miss the Zammer Lochputz Gorge. Its route leads through the tunnels of old galleries. Of course, there are also raised footbridges that take you over the Lötzbach River. You will also find a beautiful 30-metre high waterfall and one of the oldest power stations in Tyrol attached to it. In the summer months, you can add to the experience by visiting the beautifully lit trail at night.

The Galitzen circuit

The Galitzen circuit can be found near the town of Lienz. The unusually wild river Galizenbach flows through the circuit. There is no shortage of interesting sights, as there are many large and small waterfalls in the area. Despite the wildness, we can highly recommend a visit for families. There is a water park with a labyrinth and a water ferry. For larger visitors, there is a rope park or via ferrata of varying difficulty.

The Gleirsch race

This gorge can be found in the Karwndel mountains. The river Gleirsch flows through its valley. Once again, this is a place that will dazzle you with its unbridled nature and wild fragrant flow, beautiful waterfalls, clear lakes or rock tunnels. The confluence was formerly used for timber rafting. However, this is now a thing of the past. Today, the gorge is mainly a tourist spot that attracts beautiful nature and a certain physical fitness.

Grießbach Gorge

Fancy a day trip to get a bit of that adrenaline flowing? There's nothing easier than a visit to the Grießbach Gorge. As with all gorges, you'll be navigating the beaten track. But the first sight will surprise you. There are no railings on the valley side. For the adrenaline rush, there is a 25-metre long suspension bridge for the brave, which hangs just 4 metres above the river. For those who want to try a different sightseeing experience, there is a so-called "barefoot" route where no shoes are used.

The Leutasch Ghost Race

If you want to experience the local folklore along with the splendour of nature, visit the mysterious Leutasch Ghost Gorge. Legend has it that the ghost of the local gorge lives with its goblins in the wild water of the river that flows through these places. The Leutascher Ache River is known as the Hell River or the Witch River. During your tour of this mysterious gorge, you can read more details of the legend that surrounds this place on the information boards. The trail itself is criss-crossed with countless water cascades, waterfalls, pools and massive rock walls.

The Rosengarten Trail

One of the many other gorges can be found near the town of Imst. The Rosengarten Gorge is a 1.5 kilometre long gorge and is considered one of the most outstanding natural sites in Tyrol. Here you will find a magical symbiosis of plants and massive minerals. Rare ferns and mosses grow here in harmony with the huge rock masses. Visitors move along secured paths and bridges spanning the valleys.
