Zell am See is a charming Austrian town that offers activities for tourists in all seasons. In winter, the popular ski resort of Kaprun is open. In summer, you can swim in Lake Zeller See, go hiking or go on bike trips.

Lake Zeller See

The main summer attraction in Zell am See is the local lake Zeller See. It is beautiful to look at and you can do a variety of sports activities here, from swimming to sports such as sailing, water skiing or even diving. On the beach you will find a jumping hill and slides. You can refresh yourself in the café and there is a large enough meadow to lie down on to relax. If you want a quieter experience, rent a boat on the lake and explore its various corners.

Hiking

There are countless hiking trails leading directly from the town, so you don't have to drive anywhere. Choose from easy trails around the lake or go for a hike through the alpine meadows to the snowline. The hike around the lake will take around two hours, but you'll want to allow longer as there are plenty of welcoming restaurants along the way that are worth a stop.

Our tip: Head to the Schmittenhöhe area. There's an exhibition hall with wooden sculptures, a nature trail for families and a themed trail along the promenade.

Zell am See by bike

The area around Zell am See is ideal for a cycling holiday. You can easily reach the lake or take a ride through the town. Discover the most beautiful views along the well-maintained cycle paths. You can rent an e-bike right in town and no major hike will tire you out. As with the hiking trails, the cycling routes are very varied and there is something for everyone. There are plenty of high mountain trails for the really demanding bikers and the most challenging ones can be ridden with a local guide.

Our tip: A multi-day bike tour along the Tauernradweg. This is one of the most popular cycling routes and is frequented by cyclists from all over the world. The entire route is 325 kilometres long and it is definitely not worth underestimating the preparation.

Other activities

Lama Trekking and Horseback Riding - The fact that you can pay to ride a horse is now commonplace. In Zeller am See, you can also take a llama ride. These cute and entertaining animals will take you at a steady pace along mountain trails with spectacular views.

Mountaineering - The area is popular with both professional and amateur climbers. Our tip: Visit the Hinterglemm climbing area

Tennis - In Zell am See you can play tennis without any problems thanks to the modern halls and courts. You can also play squash.

Golf - There are two golf courses near Zell am See. During the season, golfers from all over the world come here to practice and you might be lucky enough to learn a few tricks from the best.

Zell am See is less than an hour and a half from Salzburg and only 50 minutes from Bad Gastein! Book your accommodation in Bad Gastein early. The whole area is very popular and capacities fill up quickly in the summer months.
