If you decide to visit the lake, you won't regret it and you will definitely want to come back. There are so many possibilities in the area that one day will not be enough.
Salzburg's largest lake
Wolfgangsee is the largest lake in Salzburg and the ninth largest in Austria. It is decorated with crystal-clear water, which also impresses with its temperature. It is one of the warmest lakes in the region (about 24°C) and its water is also drinkable.
The shores of the lake are guarded by three small towns, which are definitely worth a visit. These are St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen and Strobl. Each town has its own guardian in the form of a mountain. Their peaks are also worth a visit, as they offer beautiful views of the entire valley. There is a train to Schafberg on St. Wolganf, a cable car from St. Gilgen to Zwölferhorn and a car to the Postalm above Strobl.
Swimming Wolfgangsee
In the summer, the clear water of the lake attracts absolutely everyone for a swim. Public beaches can be found on all sides of the lake. One of the most popular spots is the Naturstrand Wasswiese, which can be found west of Strobl and is family-friendly and easy to reach even with a pram. Even further west you will find the smaller but also very popular Liegewiese Gschwendt. There are other spots near St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, but smaller villages are also great places for swimming.
But Wolfgangsee offers much more varied water fun than just swimming. How about renting a boat and enjoying a great ride in privacy. Or do you prefer a kayak or canoe? That's no problem either. Especially near the bigger cities, you'll find plenty of rental companies that will give you a great experience for a reasonable price.
Water skiing or sailing?
If you are by nature the more adventurous type, then you can also try water skiing. Never been on them before? Never mind. Especially in Strobl and St. Wolfgang you will find companies where you can pay for a course for beginners as well as for advanced skiers. And if you don't fancy jet skis, how about a wakeboard?
You can also try water skiing in St. Gilgen, but in this town we recommend something different, namely windsurfing. Of course, you'll get an instructor again. If you don't speak German, don't worry. The vast majority of the instructors can speak at least English.
If you want to try sailing, you can do that on the Wofgangsee too. In practically every one of the larger towns around the lake you will find companies that will give you a course with an instructor.
If you decide to go to Wolfgangsee, then you will certainly find many other activities that are not mentioned in the article. Don't be afraid to explore.
