Wallersee is a beautiful lake in the Austrian state of Salzburg. You can easily get there directly from Salzburg. The lake lies north of the city and can be reached in just 20 minutes by car. Wallersee is the largest lake in the area and offers plenty of fun and activities for the whole family. Part of the lake shore is the designated Wenger Moor conservation area. The area is ideal for birdwatching and you can see many protected plant species.
Swimming
There are several places along the Wallersee for swimming:
Henndorf am Wallersee
Henndorf is an idyllic village on the shores of the lake. In addition to swimming, the surrounding area is ideal for cycling and hiking. In summer, you can take part in a workshop on local herbs and their healing effects. There are regular exhibitions in the village, for example of old tractors and agricultural machinery. The church of St. Brigid is also worth a visit.
Neumarkt am Wallersee
Bathing in Neumarkt is ideal for families with children. The beach is sandy and slopes slowly down into the water. You can rent sports equipment, play volleyball and have a snack in the cafeteria. Children can play on the playground and there is an amusement park nearby. Animal lovers can ride ponies at Gerda's Pferdehof or visit the mini zoo. The Neumarkt hosts an annual wine festival.
Seekirchen am Wallersse
Seekirchen is easily accessible by bus or train and therefore ideal if you want to leave the car at home. In summer, the town organises an open-air cinema, there are countless shops for souvenir shopping and the "Emailwerk" cultural house and museum is also worth a visit. Seekirchen is close to the Wenger Moor protected area, through which many interesting hiking and cycling trails lead.
Water sports
Wallersee is a top destination for lovers of water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing. The best season for strong wind in the sails is spring and autumn, when there is a good chance of a good easterly wind. Due to the lake's ideal location, the wind often also blows from the west.
You can rent a paddleboard, kayak, canoe, various pedal boats and other water equipment. In addition to the rentals themselves, guided tours are also offered to tell you interesting information about the lake, its surroundings and ecosystem.
Fishing
Fishing is allowed on Wallersee and you can catch river and rainbow trout, pike, eels or carp. From April to October, you can buy a licence at the boat hire shop or at the Kapellerweg. Find out about the permitted baits and the exact regulations.
Minigolf
There are several miniature golf courses in the area. Some need to be driven to, but the distances are not great. The golf courses are perfectly maintained and you won't regret your trip.
You can play mini golf at Mattsee, Neumarkt and Obertrum am See, for example.
The amazing Lake Wallersee offers fun and activities for the whole family. Stop here on your way home or on a trip to Salzburg.
