Do you want to enjoy a family holiday in Austria but don't know what places to visit? Do you have small children and long sightseeing tours are out of the question? Or do you just want to experience something other than the rich history? In that case, we have a few tips for your family holiday in the next few lines.

Salzburg Zoo

Salzburg Zoo should definitely not be missing from your family programme. The zoo can be found in the beautiful 14-hectare grounds, with Mount Hellbrunn towering over it. In the 15th century, it was the site of a nature reserve of the princely archbishops. The whole area was completed in 1619.

Today, you will find both exotic fauna and native wildlife. Up to 1,200 animals of 140 species live inside the zoo. These can be found in pavilions designed to remind the animals as much as possible of their natural habitat. The annual number of visitors to Salzburg Zoo is over 300,000. The zoo has many special programmes for visitors, such as night tours. This is possible in August and September, until 10:30 in the evening.

Natural History and Engineering Museum

Another tip for a family activity is undoubtedly the Natural History and Engineering Museum in Salzburg. This style of museum will be of interest to both you and your kids. You will find a wealth of information here, but also plenty of activities that will interest your children. For example, aquariums revealing the mysterious world in the depths, coral sharks or coral reefs. In short, an exhibition bursting with life. There is also a Science Center department where you have the opportunity to learn about many scientific disciplines in a playful and comprehensible way at dozens of stations. The Natural History and Engineering Museum is one of Salzburg's most popular attractions.

Enjoy the sweets

If you're already in Salzburg, it would be a sin not to enjoy the local speciality Mozart balls. This sweet made of marzipan, pistachios, nougat and dark chocolate is typical of Salzburg. Around the city you will find a plethora of stalls, shops and cafés where you can indulge in this delicacy. But there is one place that has its own charm and history. That place is the Fürst café. Here, in 1884, Paul Fürst opened a candy shop and it was here that Mozart balls were first sold. The shop became very popular in a short time.

The cave train on the Pöstlingberg

Right in the centre of Linz you can find the railway. But not just any railway. During the ride on this Dragon Express you will meet many famous fairy tale creatures. Almost every corner has a dwarf or dragon. Underground, you can see life-size scenes from various fairy tales. You will also have the opportunity to visit the miniature Linz Main Square set in the turn of the last century. The attraction is always open from 1 March to 1 November from 10:00 to 17:00. During the summer months, opening hours are extended until 18:00.

Summer toboggan run Fuschl am See

During the summer months, we recommend visiting the toboggan run in Fuschl am See. It has been delighting visitors for 20 years and is a sporting and recreational activity for the whole family. The track is constantly being improved and made safer, so you don't have to worry about your kids and you can definitely make your holiday experience more enjoyable by using this attraction. The ride is open from May until September daily from 10:00 am.

Of course, another activity that will thrill any child on a hot summer's day is swimming. Where to go swimming?

We hope we've made it easier for you to decide how to spend your family holiday with these tips. But that's certainly not all Austria has to offer. If you research other suitable holiday activities, you'll find that the country can offer you many more interesting places suitable for the whole family.
